Ford made headlines this summer with the debut of a new vehicle that would be added to their police fleet. This vehicle was the F-150 Police Responder. What made this new police pickup truck special is the fact that it is the first pursuit-rated pickup truck to be made. The truck satisfied a need that many police and other law enforcement groups were having; a vehicle that can go off-road and still engage in vehicular pursuit.

The new pickup means that there are now seven vehicles in the Ford police fleet. While the F-150 Police Responder™ made headlines, there are other vehicles that have served law enforcement nationwide for years to great effect.

The fleet of police vehicles that Ford engineers is broken up into sections. You have the Interceptor®, the Responder™, the SSV (Special Service Vehicle), and Transit PTV. Each section holds two vehicles excluding the Transit PTV, as it is the only prisoner transport vehicle that Ford produces.

You can find Interceptor® on the road in the form of two different vehicles; a sedan and a utility. These two vehicles have a storied history, and the Interceptor® serves as the front line for the Ford police fleet. The Responder™ vehicles are Ford’s pursuit into new ideas. One is the previously mentioned F-150 Police Responder™, and the other is Responder™ Hybrid Sedan. This car can catch up to criminals while being cleaner for the environment. This allows officers to focus on the streets, instead of having to constantly head to the gas station.

Finally, you have the SSV and prisoner transport. The SSV fleet vehicles are an Expedition and an F-150 XL. When officers have a situation that a sedan can’t handle, they call in the Special Service Vehicles. Ford offers a vehicle for every situation. When police have rounded up all of the offenders, Ford has the Transit PTV Prisoner Transport. Ford has been a huge contributor to police departments for over 60 years, and the company’s continued innovation will benefit departments nationwide.
