The new Ford Pro all-electric police pilot vehicle is based on the excellent 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV, and it just became the first all-electric automobile to pass Michigan State Police testing. The motor company announced last Friday that rigorous testing included top speed, high-speed pursuit, acceleration, braking, and emergency response handling.
Ted Cannis, the CEO of Ford Pro, stated, “The fact that the Mustang Mach-E successfully stood up to the grueling Michigan State Police evaluation demonstrates that Ford can build electric vehicles that are capable, tough and reliable enough for even the most challenging jobs.”
Tests from the Michigan State Police and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department set standards that law enforcement agencies all over the country learn from to evaluate vehicles. Ford Pro scheduled the all-electric police pilot SUV for testing in the Michigan State Police 2022 model year evaluation for September. Michigan State Police will publish results for all vehicles tested on its website later in the fall.
While other all-electric vehicles built by different companies and manufacturers have shown that a vehicle with an electric powertrain can provide strong performance, Ford wanted to use its most recent Mustang for the challenging police testing program so that the vehicle could be officially certified and available for purchase by law enforcement institutions.
Ford CEO Jim Farley tweeted on Friday, "The #MustangMachE just became the first all-electric vehicle to pass the rigorous vehicle evaluation tests by the Michigan State Police. Another real-world application for EVs to help law enforcement agencies reduce their fuel usage and CO2 emissions, plus it's freaking FAST."
Back in May, Farley stated that part of Ford’s goal was creating a one-stop shop to help customers improve uptime and productivity while reducing complexity and the overall cost of ownership.
Earlier in September, Ford debuted the new Mustang Mach-E police concept car in the United Kingdom, and the company stated that "police agencies [are] lining up for a chance to try it out.”
The Ford Pro vehicle lineup is set with the all-electric 2022 E-Transit van and the all-electric 2022 F-150 Lightning Pro pickup. Ford has not yet provided a time frame for when it may plan to build any Mustang Mach-E style vehicles specifically for police use.
