The new 2023 Ford Escape has recently been undergoing testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and as the ratings come in, the Escape is performing well in terms of safety. The vehicle has earned an overall Good rating from the IIHS.

The IIHS recently updated the front overlap crash testing. The 2.0 test now includes measuring the force of impact to rear seat passengers as well as front seat passengers, whereas the previous test only measured the danger to front seat passengers. The Escape completed this test successfully, and was one of only two vehicles to receive the IIHS top tier ‘good’ rating out of the 15 small SUVs that have been tested.

The qualifications to become an IIHS Top Safety Picks are rigorous, but this rating is setting the 2023 Escape up for good things to come. To qualify, a vehicle must receive “good” or higher ratings in six different crash tests, “advanced” or higher ratings for available front crash prevention, vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention and vehicle-to-pedestrian crash prevention, and “acceptable” or “good” ratings for available headlights.

Several new evaluations are being included for 2023, such as an updated side crash test meant to simulate the dangerous crashes where two vehicles collide at an intersection. A heavy barrier meant to act as the striking vehicle in this accident hits the testing vehicle to test its safety. The barrier weight was recently increased from 3,300 lbs to 4,200 lbs, and the speed was increased from 31 mpg to 37 mph, creating more energy in the collision and providing a more accurate representation of real accidents. Tests of the vehicles’ pedestrian crash prevention systems that include night time conditions are also expected to be included in the 2023 testing.

With this most recent rating, the 2023 Ford Escape is sure to continue to shine throughout the coming year as it continues to prove that its safety systems are up to the task of protecting you and your passengers. The 2023 Escape is being assembled at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky. It is currently available to order, and will be reaching dealerships early in the new year.
