Ford will officially halt all production of its premium GT supercar before the end of 2022 with a special edition model that honors the vehicle’s racing legacy.
The Ford Motor Company recently revealed that the 2022 Ford GT LM Edition will be the end model of the third-generation vehicle, which was revived in 2016 after 10 years of unavailability.
Ford also stated that only 20 of the GT LM Edition cars will be created. For a unique appearance, customers will get to choose from exposed red or blue tinted carbon fiber that emphasizes the lower aerodynamics of the powerhouse car. This includes tinting the extreme lightweight material on the front splitter, side sills and door sills, and also the engine bay louvers, mirror stalks and rear diffuser. Deliveries are anticipated to begin this fall with production wrapping up later in 2022, according to the company.
“As we close this chapter of the road-going Ford GT, the GT LM Edition gave us a chance to inject even more heart and soul from a podium-finishing racecar, furthering the tribute to our 2016 Le Mans win,” Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports, said in a release.
The Ford GT is a prized vehicle with a tenured history in racing competitions. Like in the famous 1966 Ford v. Ferrari battle, the No. 68 Ford GT managed to gain the lead for the final time in the 20th hour of the race after going one-on-one with the No. 82 Ferrari. U.S. racer, Joey Hand, was behind the wheel on the three occasions that the Ford passed the Ferrari, reigniting a 50-year-old rivalry between the two automakers.
The current iteration of the GT was initially a striking display at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Ford didn’t reveal any details about the vehicle, even within the company, only allowing specific executives and employees to work on it in a common-looking basement room in a building near its headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.
Just 1,350 of the third-generation GTs — equipped with a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine that churns out 660-horsepower — were created by supplier and contract manufacturer Multimatic Inc. of Markham, Ontario, in Canada.
